Why Host Business Summit?

profgaithoedited

The Global Entrepreneurship Summit held in Nairobi in July was the biggest entrepreneurial showcase on the continent. The question that lingers on everyone’s mind is ‘what next?’ Mount Kenya University in conjunction with Leipzig University, Germany, will host the annual International Conference for the Advancement of Business and Management Practice in Africa (ICABUMPA). The conference will be held at KICC, Nairobi, between October 27 and 29. Dr Vincent Gaitho, chairman of the organizing committee tells us how the conference will accelerate entrepreneurial growth in Africa

Vincent Gaitho, chairman of the organizing committee of the International Conference for the Advancement of Business and Management Practice in Africa (ICABUMPA) was interviewed by The Star Newspaper Team and he had these to share.

Why host a business conference so soon after GES? Someone might say you are Johnny-come-latelies.

Not at all. This conference presents a unique opportunity where all the elements of business ecosystem congregate under one roof. In fact, the pace at which modern business concepts are evolving calls for an increase in the frequency of such interactive forums.

Is this the first gathering?

No. As a university we have been hosting the annual International Conference for the Advancement of Business and Management Practice in Africa for four years now. This year, with the inclusion of Intelligence for Innovation (iN4iN) concept of Leipzig University, it is even better. This conference might not match the GES in stature or international media focus, but it’s a key focal point that addresses business innovation and acceleration, two drivers of profitability.

For how long has Mount Kenya University been working together with Leipzig University of Germany?

We have had a partnership with Leipzig for two years now. This has really been going on very well as we learn from both ends of the world on how to improve the lives of people.

Who are the key participants of the conference?

Small and Medium Enterprises, academicians, regulators, policy makers, financial institutions, entrepreneurs and investors. It will be a good networking forum. To date, over 100 SMEs have confirmed participation while there will be more than 80 presentations in the different conference sub-themes. Corporate organizations including media houses, industries, regulatory bodies, and insurance companies will have exhibition stands at the venue.

How will be the conference be conducted?

The conference intends to proffer practical road map to growth of business in Kenya through a multi-sectoral approach. Therefore, there will be a plenary session during which reputable national and international experts from different sectors will give keynote speeches.

What are the expected outcomes of ICABUMPA-iN4iN 2015?

The theme of the conference is ‘New concepts for business acceleration for Africa’.Due to the abstract nature of business management, we hope that the presenters, participants and panel of experts will come up with a road map that will guide more entrepreneurs in Africa. These concepts will be captured in a book of proceedings to be published hopefully within one month after the event.

At the same time, under the Small Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship Awards 2015, entrepreneurs will have an opportrunity to exhibit their innovative products and services. They will also participate in a specialized training session on innovation management. The best SMEs will be awarded during the gala dinner event at the end of the conference.

This conference will offer an opportunity to merge the theories taught at the universities with the real world of work and business. The Industry will have an opportunity to share with academia expected training for enhanced business acceleration by learning current global systems that are working elsewhere.

The African business landscape is not very receptive to new ideas/concepts, especially if they are driven by the young generation. Yet, the youth are the most affected by unemployment, and stand to gain the most from entrepreneurial success. How is this conference hoping to address this?

We have brought together consummate academicians, successful entrepreneurs and business leaders to address the key drawbacks that hinder business growth in Africa. Some of these entrepreneurs are young people who will give testimonies on how they jumped the hurdles along the way. No lessons are better than those heard in first person. In addition, we have also involved key policy makers in government and the corporate world. Business success goes hand in hand with innovation. As it is said, change, when running a business, is the only constant.

Do you think the GES was a success?

Certainly. Besides the widely-reported business deals clinched with some big money companies from the West, it was also an awesome networking opportunity, and of course, did wonders for our tourism and country’s image. Entrepreneurial stakes are now very high and I envision ICABUMPA-iN4iN 2015 as a platform bringing together all entrepreneurs from around the continent.

West and East interest in Kenya

eastandwestThe fact that Kenya is witnessing renewed interest from global powers has been brought to the fore by the fact that  US President Barack Obama issued a public address in a facility whose upgrade the Chinese government gave a Sh305 million last week.

The US and China have been protagonists in the fight for global superiority and although the former is still the only superpower, the latter is currently the largest trading partner with Africa.

This is the second time the Safaricom Stadium Kasarani would be undergoing an upgrade courtesy of the Chinese in a span of three years, having been handed over to the government in March 2012.

Interestingly, the deal to upgrade the stadium was announced just 48 hours before President Obama touched down.

China said it was giving Kenya a total grant of Sh1.7 billion.  Some Sh1.2 billion of this money will be used to construct a Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi through a Technical Corporation Project.

The deals brought China’s cumulative support to the Kenyan government to Sh488.8 billion according to the Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich.

Moments after the Chinese Ambassador Liu Xianfa left Rotich’s office on Wednesday, Mr Joost Reintjes, the Nedherlands Ambassador came in to sign a deal that will eliminate double taxation on income or gains arising to the residents of both countries.

These two deals are just a tip of the iceberg of a period that has been charactarised by the signing of deals and high profile visits by Western and Asian powers.

obama2Since the American government announced in March that its president would visit the country, global powers have for the last three months been fiercely competing to remain relevant on the landscape of East Africa’s largest economy as the Obama visit threatened to overshadow them.

Businessmen from these countries too have been frequenting State House and making various investment commitments, turning a country previously viewed as a pariah state into a jewel in the global scene.

France threw the first salvo when 50 business executives lead by French Minister of State for Foreign trade Matthias Fekl who were in the country to scout for deals met with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House on June 10.

A week later, on June 18, the UK announced that it had relaxed its travel advisory to Kenya. The UK, which is the largest source of tourists for Kenya, advised her citizens to freely visit Mombasa, Kilifi, Watamu and Diani as well as the Masai Mara.

Further at the beginning of this month, Germany announced that it was upgrading its Nairobi Embassy to equal the status of the one in Pretoria, South Africa, which is the biggest in the continent.

President hails MKU founder

uhuruadreessnationPresident Uhuru Kenyatta has hailed MKU founder Dr. Simon Gicharu as a model entrepreneur and a showcase of Kenya’s entrepreneurial success for the upcoming Global Entrepreneurial Summit, 2015.

Speaking in State House, Nairobi, President Kenyatta spoke of the resolve of Kenyan entrepreneurs, adding that it is among the world’s best. “It is that very same resolve which drove Dr. Simon Gicharu, founder of Mount Kenya University and Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, 2014,” he said at the Press Conference.

“Kenya’s reputation for innovation and enterprise is fully deserved. It is our habit to rise in the hope of bettering ourselves, and our country. That is what led many of our young men and women to go the United States even before independence,” the President added.mkuchairmanawarded

US President Barack Obama is the co-host of the conference, which is being held for the first time in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Our innovators and entrepreneurs have certainly earned the honour of the summit. We will honour them in turn if we welcome our guests with our customary hospitality, and if we represent our nation and our continent as well as we are able,” added President Kenyatta.

Dr. Simon Gicharu thanked the President for recognizing MKU as a model institution. “This is a very good step in supporting entrepreneurial acumen, which is in Kenya’s DNA.”

Dr Gicharu started MKU nearly two decades ago, using a seed capital of only Ksh20,000 (USD200). Now, his brainchild is the largest private institution of higher learning in Eastern and Central Africa, with a student population of about 50,000.
